Able has been an associate superintendent overseeing Modesto’s elementary and preschool programs since July. She rose through the ranks at the district, starting as a teacher in 1994. She’s worked in human resources and points to her time as principal and a brief stint as head of special projects for budget experience.

The first woman to fill the top post in the district’s 140-year history, Able said her top priority is tackling the district budget problems. She plans to use community forums to help in that process.

“We need to set budget priorities. … This is the thing we can cut; these are things we absolutely have to keep and these are things we’ll cut if we have to, but will bring back first when we can,”
