OZETTA WATSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Much of the Enochs High School Site (and future Mary Grogan Community Park) was acquired from the late Ozetta Watson and her family. Acquisition of land for public projects can often be a contentious process. Ozetta and her family worked with the District staff to make the process simple and straightforward. They supported the purchase at a reasonable cost even though it was still actively being farmed by the family. Ozetta passed away recently at the age of 96.
Ozetta graduated from Modesto High School in 1926 at the age of 18. She graduated in the morning and got married in the afternoon. Had she had the opportunity…she would have liked to have been a teacher. She excelled in sewing and Math. She made all her grandkids clothes and costumes.
Her husband was Carl “Chet” Chester Watson and they had one son – Robert “Bob” Chester Watson. Her maiden name was Harding. She was a homemaker all her life with the exception of doing baby laundry at home for McFedders Hospital. Her husband worked for the city of Modesto Water Department and died of a heart attack at 59 years old. When her husband died in 1963 – she inherited her family farm from her uncle in 1964. Her uncle was her mother’s brother who inherited the farm from their grandfather. Her son, Bob, took over the farming. There was a total of 137.5 acres.
Ozetta had a passion for the poor. Some of the many organizations she gave to were the Salvation Army, Easter Seals, Veterans Administration, and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. She would get so many requests and finally her comment was, “I just can’t keep the whole world going…” She was a great story teller and told many stories about the old days of going to school in a horse and buggy. She loved sports and fishing was her favorite sport to be active in and football was her favorite to watch.
She would be happy and delighted to give a student who would normally not have an opportunity for an education, to benefit from a scholarship in her name.
Both District and City Staff who worked with the Ozetta Watson Family want to honor her memory as a special person by establishing a scholarship fund for Enochs High School in her name.
